Christmas Tree Skirt
Christmas Tree Skirt
Sunday 16 August 10.30-4.30pm
Tutor: Mel Forrest
Level - Intermediate - class size 6
Ho ho ho! Get ready to have the best-dressed Christmas tree around with our new Tree Skirt workshop. During this class, Mel will guide you through the process of creating a panelled patchwork top before sandwiching and machine quilting it. Finishing off with a masterclass on cutting, joining and applying binding on the bias and creating ties, you will learn all of the skills you need to complete a fun and festive make to adorn your home in December. You can see from the materials list that you can make this skirt as simple or as scrappy as you like (Mel’s skirt has 10 fabrics, including some favourite leftovers from a quilt project). You’ll be provided with a paper template, so no rotary equipment is needed for this class, just large fabric scissors.
This course is suitable for intermediate quilters who have already stitched a quilt and want to try something new. Machine sewn.
We’re teaching this class in the summer as we predict friends and family will clamour for you to sew them one too!
Materials and equipment required:
Sewing Machine. Don’t forget your 1/4-in sewing foot, pedal, lead and instruction book. Or travel light and book a workshop machine (don’t worry, it’ll be a full size machine - we just love this photo)!
Walking Foot (if you have one)
Basic sewing kit - large fabric scissors, plenty of pins, hand sewing needle
Two half metres of fabric (112cm wide) for a two-colour Christmas tree skirt
or four Fat Quarters or more for greater variation. Note: you can use up to 12 fabrics, if you like! (The minimum fabric size if using scraps is 10 x 16-in / 25 x 45cm)
Coordinating cotton/sew-all thread for piecing, or a neutral
1.5m of 112cm wide fabric for backing, binding and ties - plain or patterned
1m of 115cm wide wadding
505 spray or curved safety pins
Coordinating or contrasting thread for quilting
Refreshments will be provided. It’s advisable to sort out your fabrics beforehand to make best use of the workshop time. You can buy additional fabric and haberdashery during the class.
