Look after your sewing machine and it’ll do you proud for decades. Here are a few essentials to keep it in good shape.

Universal machine needles are specific to the fabric/thread and will fit all machines. For everyday sewing with quilting cottons, Universal 70/10 and 80/12 are good all rounders. For machine quilting, choose 80/12 Quilting needles as they have a really sharp point for stitching through all layers of your quilt. And remember, don’t just replace your machine needle when it breaks. A new needle for a new project, should be your mantra!

• Accurate seam allowances are essential for patchwork. The Quilters’ 1/4in foot is a snap on foot, suitable for low shank machines, such as Brother, Janome and Elna. (* Not suitable for Bernina machines which have a different attachment).

• For free motion machine quilting, you’ll need an open foot for your machine so you can clearly see your stitching. This foot is suitable for low shank machines such as Brother, Janome and Elna. (* as above).

• The Teflon non stick ultra guide foot is used when stitching oilcloth or vinyl, so the foot glides over the fabric. This foot is suitable for low shank machines such as Brother, Janome and Elna. (* as above).
