Sashiko - Stencils, Books Haberdashery
We love sashiko stitching! This is a traditional form of stitching from Japan, sewn with a thicker thread and larger stitches, to create simple or complex geometric patterns.
The stitching is intended to contrast against the fabric. Traditionally it’s white stitching on a dark indigo blue, but you can sew as you wish, just remember to have a good contrast. Our Perle threads (no.8) are an ideal thread for sashiko. Instore we also sell Perle no.5 threads.
Here are a variety of tools for creating sashiko patterns - stencils, pencils, needles, plus a few of our favourite books. In store we have an even wider selection of books on sashiko, born and visible mending. Plus, an interesting collection of shot cottons and Japanese woven fabrics by Sevenberry, ideal for decorating with sashiko stitching.
