Looking for a handmade present for a loved one, maybe with a significant birthday or milestone anniversary? Or maybe you have a football-mad youngster with a favourite shirt number? Or for a young child who is learning their numbers, this workshop is perfect. You'll learn how to combine squares and half-square-triangles to create a one-of-a-kind cushion or a quilt.

Students will be given the patterns for every number 0-9, so you can decide on the day, what to sew. The combinations are limitless! This is the ideal class if you want to use some precious fabrics from your stash or use leftover charm squares and is a great skill builder. Machine sewn blocks..

Equipment and material needed:

  • Sewing machine. Check beforehand that it works and stitches a straight stitch with an even tension. Don't forget your straight 1/4-in foot, spare bobbin, instruction booklet etc

  • Basic sewing kit containing sharp fabric scissors, small scissors, pencil, pins and a stitch ripper

  • Rotary cutter, mat and ruler

  • Scraps are ideal for this workshop, (as long as your fabrics are larger than 3-1/2 x 3-1/2in). Combine all the scraps that you like (or maybe a fabric style, like feedsacks or nautical or modern geometrics) in contrasting or coordinating colours. To save time before the class, cut 15 3-1/2-in squares from your fabrics (in a variety of patterns). We'd suggest a minumum of 7 different fabric patterns / colours for the best effect for each block.

  • 1 metre of background fabric - plain, linen texture, grunge, cottage cloth or low volumes are ideal for this

  • Cotton thread to coordinate (or a neutral)

  • If making a cushion, to finish you'll need 50 x 50cm lining fabric (an unwanted FQ or calico is ideal for this), plus 50x50cm of wadding and 50cm fabric for backing

  • If making a quilt, we'll discuss quantities of backing fabric, wadding and binding to complete your quilt, during the day

If there is anything you’re missing, you can buy fabrics, threads and haberdashery etc from the store during the day. Refreshments will be provided at each workshop. At lunchtime, either bring your own lunch or visit one of the many delis and tea rooms in the high street.
