Level - All Levels
Looking for an easy to sew project that is stress-free and requires no previous sewing skills? Looking for a crafty make that is portable enough for sewing on the train, whilst you’re doing the parent taxi or on the sofa in the evening? Then come and learn how to make a Kawandi on one of our popular classes. This style of slow stitch quilting is really relaxing and making Kawandi is definitely a mindful activity. Kawandi (also known as Siddi) originate from India where they have been made for many years. You’ll be using small pieces from your scrap bag (and ours), plus Perle cotton thread to create a beautifully textured textile. It can be purely decorative, or Marion will also show you how to make a Kawandi as a cushion cover. Kawandi also make ideal presents.
PS - we’ve just seen another quilt shop offering a Kawandi class for £80 - OMG - think about how much fabric and thread you could buy with the £58 difference in price…
Suitable for all levels of stitcher, as long as you can sew a running stitch and thread a needle, we can teach you the rest. During the workshop you’ll learn the technique which you can complete in your own time at home in a few hours. Hand sewn.
Materials and equipment required:
100% quilting weight cotton fabric scraps (at least 2x2-in, left over charm squares and offcuts are all fine). They can be an assortment of colours and patterns, or all plains, or one colour (eg blues) in a variety of shades and tones. Approx 1 metre’s worth. Or, a charm pack can also be used to top up your scraps..
Fat quarter of cotton fabric for your backing, or an old cotton or linen teatowel or 50cm of butter muslin/double gauze
Fat quarter of thin wadding (optional)
Cotton Perle thread no. 12 in a neutral colour, or a contrasting colour to your fabrics. (You can stitch in multiple colours)
Basic sewing kit - large fabric scissors, plenty of pins, hand sewing needle, plus any thread for tacking
Seam roller or a seam presser if you have one
Fabric Clips are very useful
Thimble (optional) if you wear one
Refreshments will be provided. It’s advisable to sort out your materials beforehand to make best use of the workshop time. However, if there’s anything you’re missing, you can buy fabric and Perle thread during the day.
