BOOKING OPENS 15 JUNE

Wed 1 October 10.30-4.30 with a break for lunch

Tutor: Kate Higgens

Level - Intermediate

A chance to sew something a little different - a large bear (approx 46cm / 18-in tall). The bear has button eyes and soft joints/limbs so it sits up. It’s an excellent opportunity to use treasured fabrics. Perhaps they’re scraps left over from early quilt projects, or maybe they’re family treasures that hold a great sentimental value - family shirts, dresses, aprons, even some pyjamas! This is the ideal project to save them in a lovely memory bear to keep. The bears can be made in just a couple of fabrics for contrast, or maybe you can make every section in a different fabric.

Suitable for intermediate stitchers that are confident at cutting and sewing fabrics. Machine sewn.

Materials and equipment required:

  • Sewing Machine. A basic sewing machine is fine. Don’t forget the 1/4-in or standard straight sewing foot pedal, lead and instruction booklet. Or you can hire a machine subject to availability (just add to your booking)

  • Rotary equipment - mat (at least A3 in size), ruler and rotary cutter with a sharp blade or fabric scissors as you prefer

  • 75cm of cotton fabric (one fabric or several fabrics as above which should be a similar weight). If making from assorted fabrics, simply pop them all in a bag and decide on the day!

  • 100% cotton thread in a coordinating colour

  • Basic sewing kit - fabric / thread scissors, pins, stitch ripper

  • Bag of polyester toy stuffing

  • 2 buttons for eyes or embroidery thread for sewn eyes

  • Square of felt for the nose (or we have scraps of felt you can use)

Refreshments will be provided during the day. There will be a break for lunch. You’re welcome to bring your own lunch, or there are a variety of coffee shops, tea rooms and delis in the high street.

It’s advisable to sort out your materials beforehand to make best use of the workshop time. You can also buy fabric and haberdashery in store during the day and will get Loyalty Card stamps on purchases.
