Tutor: Marion Haslam

Level: confident beginners/intermediate

Learn how to combine patchwork and appliqué in one modern quilt. Marion’s first quilt was based on classic blue and white china, but you of course can choose any colour combinations. There is also a choice of finished sizes to make. If you are newer to quiltmaking, the smaller option will of course be faster to finish.

Marion’s second blue and white quilt, sewn as part of our mudlarking window display, features the Larking collection by Janet Clare and we can offer quilt kits for this workshop. The kits feature either the Larking prints, a variety of carefully chosen low volume prints to complement and the China Plates design for the borders and binding. The second kit option has a selection of prints with children in mind, again with low volume prints and a coordinating border print (of your choosing). The kits will be made to order, so please pre-order before the workshop. (If you’ve booked on the course, but didn’t order a kit, just give us a call on 01634 838880 before 18 July, so we have time to prepare one for you).

However, the pattern will also be stunning in your own choice of patterned charms or even a variety of solid colours. The finished quilt measures approximately 90 x 90cm (36 x 36in), or 76 x 76cm (30 x 30-in) which makes it an ideal size for a wall quilt.

During the day students will learn a modern way of sewing appliqué using a fusible medium which is a satisfying and fast way to create a quilt. Everyone works at different speeds. Some students may even be able to start quilting their quilt tops and you’ll be shown several options for quilting. Note: students should have sewn a quilt beforehand or come onto one of our beginners courses, so they can finish the quilt in their own time at home. Machine sewn.
