Tutor: Marion Haslam

Level - All Levels 10.30-4.30pm

Looking for an easy to sew project that is stress-free and requires no previous sewing skills? Looking for a crafty make that is portable enough for commuting, whilst doing the parent taxi or evening sofa stitching? This style of quilting is really relaxing and definitely a mindful activity. Kawandi is one of our most popular classes and now we’ve taken this style of slow stitch a stage further by making one-of-a-kind stockings.

On this full day class, Marion will teach you the art of Kawandi in the morning and how to stitch and quilt your stocking shapes. In the afternoon, she’ll demonstrate the completion of your stocking at home in your own time. The Kawandi stitching is all hand sewn. The final construction can be done by machine if you have one at home. However, it’s also possible to stitch the entire stocking by hand. Note: you won’t finish stitching the stocking in the workshop, but will have all the instructions for completing at home.

PS - we’ve just seen another quilt shop offering a Kawandi class for £80 - OMG - think about how much fabric and thread you could buy with the £35 difference in price…

Suitable for all levels of stitcher, as long as you can sew a running stitch and thread a needle, we can teach you the rest. You’ll take home a copy of the stocking pattern, so you can sew more in time for Christmas, just don’t forget to keep one for yourself!

Materials and equipment required:

  • 100% quilting weight cotton fabric scraps (at least 2-1/2 x 2-1/2-in, left over charm squares and offcuts are all fine). Obviously you can stick to Christmas prints and colours, but these stockings really do look great in all colours and patterns. They can be an assortment of colours and patterns, or all plains, or one colour (eg blues) in a variety of shades and tones. Approx 1 metre’s worth. A charm pack can also be used to top up your scraps

  • Unwanted Fat quarter of cotton fabric for your backing, or an old cotton pillowcase (it won’t be visible)

  • Wadding size 35x60cm (it’s OK to use frankenbatting if you join small scraps before the class)…

  • Cotton Perle thread no. 12 in your choice of colours. (You can stitch in multiple colours)

  • Basic sewing kit - large fabric scissors, plenty of pins, hand sewing needle

  • Seam roller or a seam presser is very useful

  • Fabric clips are very useful

  • Thimble (optional)

To complete your stocking at home:

  • Sewing Machine (optional)

  • Fat quarter of quilting cotton fabric for backing, 50cm of quilting cotton / poplin / pre-shrunk calico for lining

  • Cotton / Sew-All thread to match your fabrics

  • 20cm of ribbon

  • 50cm of pom-pom trim (optional)

Refreshments will be provided. It’s advisable to sort out your fabrics beforehand to make best use of the workshop time, but we’ll also have a scrap basket that you can dive into for free. You can buy additional threads and all the haberdashery mentioned during the class.
