Level: confident beginners/intermediate

Learn the art of appliqué and sew a seasonal wall quilt of a poinsettia wreath, that can be completed in a couple of sewing sessions ready for the festivities. You’ll learn the technique of modern appliqué using a fusible medium, which enables you to create detailed pictorial fabric images. No drawing skills are needed as you’ll be using Kate’s design, but obviously you’re free to add favourite motifs of your own. The quilt is the perfect size 46 x 46cm (18 x 18-in), so you can finish stitching in no time and can enjoy it as part of your seasonal decorating each year. Machine sewn.

Ideal for students who are competent at machine sewing and who would like to learn the art of appliqué.

Equipment and material needed:

• Sewing machine. Remember the foot pedal, a standard foot for zig zag stitching, plus your straight sewing or ¼in foot, spare bobbins, instruction booklet etc. Put in a new needle before this workshop - it needs to be sharp!

• Basic sewing kit containing sharp fabric scissors, small scissors or snips, pencil, pins and a stitch ripper

• One FQ of fabric (min 50 x 56cm) for the background - Grunge, Linen Texture and Cottage Cloth are all good options

• 25cm (or 1 FQ) of red/reds for the poinsettias

• 25cm (or 1 FQ) of greens for the leaves - note it’s good to have several different tones, so bring any small pieces you have

• 1m of Bondaweb

• Cotton threads to coordinate with your fabrics (best to bring a selection of different colours)

• Small red beads for the berries - we will have these in stock at the shop for you

• Fat quarter of wadding

• Fat quarter of backing fabric (or buy 50cm if you’d like to add a hanging sleeve)

• 25 x 112cm fabric for binding (a red or green would look very festive

• Thread for quilting

If there is anything you’re missing, you can buy fabrics, threads and haberdashery etc from the store during the day. Refreshments will be provided at the workshop.
