Tutor: Mel Forrest

Level: competent beginners

Have you bought an overlocker, but it’s still in its box? Well, come to this introductory class and Mel will demystify how to use these amazing machines. Mel is a very experienced dressmaker and her overlocker is an essential tool for giving a professional finish to her handmade garments. And as overlocking stitches have a natural stretch, using an overlocker is perfect for sewing entire jersey garments.

However, with 4 spools of thread, 2 needles and more knobs and dials than a regular sewing machine, they can be intimidating, but this class is ideal for increasing your confidence. The class will cover the essentials you need to know - threading your machine, adjusting tension, sewing curved edges and hem-bands/cuffs, stitching with 3 and 4 threads and unpicking. And if you need any more encouragement we’ve seen a similar class locally at 3 times the price! So choose wisely and come to Hometown.

The workshop fee includes 4 reels of Coats Moon thread to use in class (and take home with you for further practise). Machine sewn.

Materials and equipment required:

  • Overlocker. Bring all the accessories included with it - tweezers and screwdrivers are particularly important. Don’t forget the cable, pedal and instruction booklet. Please ensure your overlocker is in good working order.

  • Basic sewing kit, including sharp fabric scissors/snips, stitch ripper and pins

  • 50cm of pre-shrunk calico, cut into 15cm (6-in) squares before the class

  • Optional; other fabrics - you’re welcome to bring along any other fabrics to play with eg jersey or sweat shirting

Refreshments are provided.
