NEW! Modern Hexie Quilt
NEW! Modern Hexie Quilt
Sunday 27th April or Sunday 1 June, 10.30-4.30pm
Both courses are now full, but if you missed out, please leave us your email, so you are the first to know new dates.
Tutor: Mel Forrest
Level – Intermediate. Suitable for quilters who are confident with rotary cutting and sewing accurate ¼-in seams.
Do you love this traditional design, but are put off by hand-piecing? Then come along to this workshop and learn how to sew a classic hexagon quilt with your machine! Mel will teach you the Y-seam technique to assemble large-scale hexagons quickly and easily, without a single hand-sewn stitch.
This quilt pattern is perfect for using up scraps of your favourite fabrics, or putting a treasured FQ pack to good use. The design works well with both traditional or modern fabrics – you could choose variations of just one colour for a subtle quilt, or go bold with a variety of patterns and colours.
There are several size options to sew, starting with a very manageable 42 x 55-in (as seen in my New England sample). You will be given a handout with details of the other sizes and fabric requirements, so you can choose to go on to make something larger after the class if you would like to. Machine sewn.
Materials and equipment required:
Sewing Machine. Don’t forget the 1/4-in sewing foot and spare bobbins. Or you can hire a machine subject to availability
Rotary mat (at least A3) and rotary cutter with a sharp blade
Multi Size Hexagon acrylic template (this can be added to your booking if you need one and collected at the workshop)
Basic sewing kit - fabric / thread scissors, pins, fabric marking pen/pencil, stitch ripper
Cotton thread to coordinate or a neutral colour
Fabrics for a 42 x 55-in quilt:15 long quarters or 12 fat quarters
If you’re using scraps from your stash, you’ll need pieces measuring at least 7 x 7-in
Wadding, backing and binding fabric options will be outlined in class depending on your quilt size
It’s advisable to buy your fabrics before the class to make the best use of workshop time. However, students can buy from the shop during the day.
Refreshments are provided and there will be a break for lunch. You’re welcome to bring your own lunch, or there are a wide variety of coffee shops, tea rooms and delis in the high street.
