Tutor: Mel Forrest

9 and 23 June. The course is 2 full days 10.30-4.30pm with a break for lunch

Level - Confident Beginners

If you’re keen to learn the technique of 'crumb quilting' and have a stash of treasured scraps that you’d like to make use of, this is the class for you! On the first day you’ll create a patched fabric panel by piecing together scraps - this is a relaxed, freeform patchwork approach, so no measuring or rulers required! The crumb quilt pieces will be prepared for machine quilting and quilting design options discussed. On the second day, you’ll machine quilt the panels and Mel will guide you step-by-step on turning them into a simple yet stunning tote bag. Machine sewn.

This workshop is suitable for quilters and dressmakers who already know how to use a sewing machine. The end results for this course are always stunning! Note: if you would like to pay in 2 installments, please book by phone or instore.

Materials and equipment required:

Sewing Machine. A basic sewing machine is fine. Don’t forget the 1/4-in or standard straight sewing foot pedal, lead and instruction booklet. Alternatively you can hire a machine/walking foot (subject to availability) as you book

Walking foot (if you have one)

Rotary equipment (optional) - mat (at least A3 in size) and rotary cutter with a sharp blade or large fabric scissors

Basic sewing kit - fabric / thread scissors, pins, stitch ripper

Scraps! Bring along anything you would like to include in your crumb quilt design -  orphan blocks, awkward-shaped dressmaking leftovers or scraps from favourite quilt projects can all be utilised as long as they are 2 x 2-in or larger. Fabrics of a similar weight work well (cottons, linens, lightweight denims etc.) but best to avoid anything too bulky or heavy. Bring plenty with you - each panel needs to be 17-in square when finished.

Thread for piecing and quilting your panels (I can advise on colour on the day)

2 fat quarters you no longer like (we all have them!) or 50cm of quilting cotton/calico - this will be completely hidden and is to give your bag structure

50cm of wadding

Odif 505 spray (optional)

70cm of fabric for lining and handles (interfacing will be provided by us if needed)

Refreshments will be provided during the day. You’re welcome to bring your own lunch, or there are a variety of coffee shops, tea rooms, delis and restaurants in the high street.

It’s advisable to sort out your materials beforehand to make best use of the workshop time. However, if there’s anything you’re missing, you can buy supplies in store during the day.

If you have any questions, please phone us on 01634 838880 before booking. Please note we do not send out reminders to students before the workshop as all the materials information is here! For details of local car parks, please refer to the Visit Us page.
