Jelly Rolls are marvellous pre-cut strips, all in colour coordinated collections. With pre-cuts we can start to sew quilts without any delay! In this workshop, you’ll sew a quilt top, using a fun variation of a traditional pattern, Log Cabin. During the day, you’ll be busy piecing the patchwork blocks. Whilst you’ll probably not get the top completely pieced, you’ll have the full instructions for finishing and can quilt at your leisure at home. There are 2 size options for the quilt you wish to sew. Machine sewn.

Materials and equipment required:

Sewing Machine. A basic sewing machine is fine. Don’t forget the 1/4-in or standard straight sewing foot pedal, spare bobbins, lead and instruction booklet. Alternatively you can hire a machine subject to availability (just add to your basket with your workshop booking).

Rotary equipment - mat (at least A3 in size), ruler (at least 12-in long) and rotary cutter with a sharp blade. A square ruler (8 1/2 or 9 1/2-in) could also be useful..

Basic sewing kit - fabric / thread scissors, pins, stitch ripper

Cotton thread to coordinate with your Jelly roll or a neutral colour

Before the class, decide on the finished size of project you wish to make.

Large quilt approx 54 x 65-in (136 x 165cm)

  • Jelly Roll (40 strips). Or if you have plenty of fabric, make your own jelly before the workshop. Cut 2 strips from 20 fabrics = 40 strips. Each strip is cut 2-1/2-in x width of the fabric (42-44-in). Cut with a rotary cutter and ruler for accuracy and straightness! Fabrics can be plain or patterned

  • 20cm plain or patterned fabric to coordinate with your jelly roll

  • 75cm fabric for setting triangles. This can be a plain, plainish, low-volume, subtle pattern etc. Busy patterns or stripes should be avoided

  • To complete your quilt without borders at home: 2.9m backing fabric (115cm wide), 40cm binding fabric, 150 x 175cm (58 x 69-in) wadding, thread for hand or machine quilting. Any additional fabric for borders is optional

Cot / lap size quilt max 38 x 54-in (97 x 137cm)

  • Half Jelly Roll (20 strips). Or if you have plenty of fabric at home, make your own jelly. Cut 2 strips of 10 fabrics = 20 fabrics. See instructions above

  • 20cm plain or patterned fabric to coordinate with your jelly roll

  • 50cm fabric for setting triangles. See notes above

  • To complete your quilt without borders: 1.5m backing fabric (115cm wide), additional 20cm of backing fabric for a sleeve (if required), 40cm binding fabric, 107 x 142cm (42 x 56-in) wadding, thread for hand or machine quilting. Any additional fabric for borders is optional

Refreshments are provided during the day with a break at lunchtime. You’re welcome to bring your own lunch, or there are many coffee shops, tea rooms and delis in the high street.

Of course, if there’s anything you’re missing, you can buy supplies in store during the day.
