Looking for a quick make for a handmade present? The Open Wide Zip Pouch, designed by Anna Graham, is a winner. The pouches can be used as craft bags for sewists, make up bags for super stylish friends, or perhaps a useful travel pouch for all your cables, pods and plugs. The project is a great chance to use some of your treasured fabrics to make them personal to the lucky recipient. We’re re-running this workshop, so you have a chance to get ahead with present-making for friends and family this autumn.

Plus they’re a super-quick make, so no need to just stop at one. After the most recent workshop, 3 students have already several more, as they are such a satisfying sew.

Materials and equipment required:

  • Sewing Machine. Don’t forget the straight stitch / 1/4-in foot, zip foot, spare bobbins, lead and foot pedal! If you’re not sure which is your zip foot, bring them all and Mel can identify for you! Or travel light and hire a machine

  • Basic sewing kit, including sharp fabric scissors/rotary cutter (as you prefer), pins and stitch ripper

  • Fat Quarter of patterned fabric for the outside

  • Fat Quarter of contrasting plain or patterned fabric for the lining

  • Nylon zip at least 25cm long*. Can be a contrasting colour. Note longer zips are fine as Mel will show you how to shorten zips

  • Cotton thread to coordinate with your fabrics or a neutral colour

  • A scrap of fabric for the zip pull (or dive into our scrap basket)

  • 25cm of Vilene Cotton G700* (or Vilene 220)

  • 25cm of Vilene H630 wadding* (optional)

To make best use of time in this bite-size workshop, before the class, please prep your fabrics as follows:

Cut: 2 10-in wide by 7-in tall rectangles from your outer fabric, lining fabric and interfacing

Fuse: iron the two G700 interfacing pieces to the wrong side of your two outer fabric pieces

Students should know how to use a sewing machine before signing up (i.e. straight stitching with an even tension). Machine sewn.

Please buy and prep your fabrics before the class to make the best use of workshop time. Students can buy additional haberdashery, such as the zip during the class.

Refreshments are provided.
