Class run for 3 full day sessions 10.30-4.30pm

Tutor: Mel Forrest

Sunday 17 August, 14 September, 12 October

Level - confident beginners / intermediate

Have you made several small quilts, and are ready to tackle something bigger? Are you keen to make a large quilt, but are intimidated by making so many blocks? Then this is the project for you! By sewing just nine 24-in blocks, you can create an impressive 80 x 80in (203 x 203cm) quilt in no time! Each session, Mel will teach you how to make one of the 3 block designs, and by the end of the course you will be ready to assemble your big blocks. You could choose festive fabrics to make an heirloom Christmas quilt as Mel has done. Or pick your favourite fat quarters from your stash - whether traditional, contemporary, patterned or plainish - anything goes! Machine sewn.
Note - during the course you’ll be piecing the quilt blocks and you can then quilt and finish your quilt in your own time at home. And we’ve timed it, so your quilt will be ready in time for cold winter nights!

Materials and equipment required:

  • Sewing Machine. A basic sewing machine is fine. Plus spare needles and bobbins. Don’t forget the straight sewing (1/4-in foot), pedal, lead and instruction booklet. Or, hire a machine subject to availability (just add to your basket with your booking).

  • 16 fat quarters (patterns in a variety of colours and tones)

  • 9 ‘background’ fat quarters in low volume / neutrals / smaller ditsy prints / tonal prints to contrast with your patterns

  • 1m of fabric for sashing

  • Thread to match your fabrics or a neutral colour

  • Basic sewing kit - fabric / thread scissors, pins, stitch ripper

  • Rotary Cutting equipment (cutter, mat and ruler). We do have some spares you can borrow

To complete the quilt later at home you’ll need

  • 203 x 203cm (84 x 84in) Wadding and backing fabric

  • Thread for quilting

  • 60cm fabric for binding

Refreshments will be provided during each class. There will be a break for lunch. You’re welcome to bring your own lunch, or there are a wide variety of coffee shops, tea rooms and delis in the high street.

It’s advisable to sort out your materials beforehand to make best use of the workshop time. However, if there’s anything you’re missing, you can buy supplies in store during each session.
