10.30-4.30pm
Tutor: Kate Higgens
Level: confident beginners/intermediate
Learn the art of appliqué in the first of our seasonal workshops with Kate Higgens. You’ll learn the technique of modern appliqué using a fusible medium, which enables you to create detailed pictorial fabric images. Plump pumpkins, lush sunflowers and autumnal leaves are all included. No drawing skills are needed as you’ll be using Kate’s designs, but obviously you’re free to add favourite motifs of your own. The quilt is the perfect size 69x115cm (27 x 45-in), so you can finish stitching in no time and can enjoy as part of your seasonal decorating each year.
During the day students will sew the quilt top which can be quilted and bound in your own time at home. Machine sewn.
Autumn Appliqué is ideal for students who are competent at machine sewing and who would like to learn the art of appliqué. There has been a lot of interest in this workshop as we’ve had the quilt on display instore - so don’t delay in booking!
Equipment and material needed:
Sewing machine. Make sure beforehand that it works and you know how to thread it, wind the bobbin and straight stitch with an even tension. Remember the foot pedal, a standard foot for zig zag stitching, plus your straight sewing or ¼in foot, spare bobbins, instruction booklet etc. Put in a new needle before this workshop - it needs to be sharp!
Basic sewing kit containing sharp fabric scissors, small scissors or snips, pencil, pins and a stitch ripper
50cm of fabric for background - Grunge, Linen Texture and Cottage Cloth are all good options. (This can be pre-cut into three 12-1/2-in squares and three 6-1/2 x 12-1/2-in rectangles before the class if you like)
6 Fat Quarters of autumnal coloured plain/plainish/small patterned fabrics
Any scraps of fabrics in autumnal colours can also be useful, so bring them along! We’ll also have our overflowing scrap basket for you to dive into*
1m of Bondaweb
Cotton threads to coordinate with your fabrics (best to bring a selection of different colours)
50cm of autumnal or toning print fabric for borders (this can be bought later, once you have sewn the panel)
To finish your quilt at home:
1.25m of wadding and backing fabric
25cm fabric if you’d like a contrast binding
Thread for quilting
If there is anything you’re missing, you can buy fabrics, threads and haberdashery etc from the store during the day. Refreshments will be provided at each workshop.
