Come and be inspired by an exquisite vintage quilt and learn not one, not two, but three different methods to sew eight-pointed stars! Test out the machine-pieced techniques and sew some samples before you settle on your favourite method to create your own beautiful heirloom. This project is perfect for showcasing treasured scraps and making a feature of small quantities of fabrics. There will be plenty of opportunity during the workshop to study the stunning range of 1930s fabrics used in the sample quilt for inspiration!

This quilt is perfect for scraps and as you will not be sewing a specific quilt size, you can use as much or as little of your scrap stash! Please see below the minimum fabric needed for the class. Mel has also provided some approximate requirements for different quilt sizes to help you sort your scraps or fat quarters.

If you’d like to stitch in a similar feedsack style, you can pick and choose from our extensive collection of feedsack prints.

Materials and equipment required:

  • Sewing Machine. A basic sewing machine is fine. Plus spare needles and bobbins. Don’t forget the straight sewing (1/4-in foot), pedal, lead and instruction booklet. Or, hire a machine subject to availability (just add to your basket when booking)

  • Thread to match your fabrics or a neutral colour

  • Basic sewing kit - fabric / thread scissors, pins, stitch ripper

  • Rotary Cutting equipment (cutter, mat and ruler). We do have some spares you can borrow

Scraps are perfect for this quilt, so do bring along bits and pieces from your stash

  • Minimum of 2 contrasting fat quarters and one plain background fat quarter (enough to sew three samples only)

Approximate fabric requirements for different quilt sizes

  • 40 x 45-in quilt: 8 long or fat quarters, 1.8m solid/low volume background fabric (72 stars)

  • 60 x 65-in quilt: 16 long or fat quarters, 3.9m solid/low volume background fabric (156 stars)

  • 80 x 85-in quilt: 28 long or fat quarters, 6.8m solid/ ow volume background fabric (272 stars)

NB: As the cutting and therefore fabric consumption for each of the techniques varies slightly, the above fabric requirements are an estimation only. Depending on the type of stars you choose to make, you may need more or less fabric for the quilt sizes outlined above.

Refreshments will be provided. There will be a break for lunch. You’re welcome to bring your own lunch, or there are a wide variety of coffee shops and tea rooms in the high street.

It’s advisable to sort out materials beforehand to make best use of the workshop time. However, you can buy supplies in store during the day.
