Level - Confident Beginners / intermediate

Do you want to sew a large quilt with a variety of seaside-inspired patchwork block patterns in an achievable time frame? And in an easy to sew format? Well, sign up for Kate’s new block-of-the-month (BOM) course, spread over 3 workshops. You’ll be working in six easy-to-sew rows of blocks, to make a quilt that measures approx 157 x 157cm (62 x 62-in). The 3 month format allows you plenty of time for trying new block patterns and for sewing your quilt.

Your blocks can be quilted by hand or machine using quilt-as-you-go methods, so the final quilt comes together remarkably quickly. Plus, it’s so much easier to tackle a large quilt by way of bite-size pieces. (If you’d like to make the quilt even wider, you can simply make more blocks and for a longer quilt, repeat your favourite rows, but you will need to calculate and buy additional fabric in this case).

You choose your coastal colour scheme - icecream pastels, nautically-inspired or even Caribbean brights would all look fabulous. * Note - Kate will be discussing how to cut wadding and backing fabrics in the first workshop, so don’t worry if you haven’t bought these beforehand. But obviously if you have suitable sizes of both in your stash, bring them!

Machine sewn.

Materials and equipment required:

  • Sewing Machine. A basic sewing machine is fine. Plus spare needles and bobbins. Don’t forget the straight sewing (1/4-in foot), foot pedal, lead and instruction booklet. Alternatively, hire a machine subject to availability (just add to your basket when booking)

  • 3.5m of background fabric (plain/plainish is best)

  • 4m in a selection of quarter and half metre cuts. (Kate used 13 different fabrics). if you have some smaller pieces in your stash that match your colour scheme, bring them along as they can be used in your blocks

  • Backing fabric - you can use different fabrics for the block strips. You’ll need 60 or 80cm fabric (112cm wide) for each patchwork strip. Or buy 3.5m of one fabric *see note above

  • 6 Wadding strips measuring 30-40 cm and 160cm wide* see note above

  • To complete the quilt 50cm of fabric for binding

  • Thread to match your fabrics or a neutral colour

  • Basic sewing kit - fabric / thread scissors, pins, clips, stitch ripper

  • Rotary Cutting equipment (cutter, mat and ruler). We do have some spares you can borrow

Refreshments are provided during each class, with a break for lunch. You’re welcome to bring your own lunch, or there are a wide variety of coffee shops, tea rooms and delis in the high street.

It’s advisable to sort out most of your materials beforehand to make best use of the workshop time. However, if there’s anything you’re missing, you can buy supplies in store during each workshop.
