Quilt Journals
Quilt Journals
BOOKING OPENS SUNDAY 15 JUNE
Friday 8 August 1.30-4.30pm (3 hour class)
Tutor: Alison Abrahams
Level - Confident Beginners / intermediate
As quilters, it’s lovely to have a journal to record our planned projects, include fabric swatches and measurements, pattern notes as we sew and of course a photo of the finished quilt. We also use them for bright ideas and techniques we’ve seen online, inspirational pictures and random jottings. Sewing a removable patchwork cover for your A5 book, not only showcases your skills as a quilt maker, but also makes a hardwearing cover for a journal, which will be in use for years. Plus, these make lovely handmade presents for makers, bakers, cyclists, knitters, basically anyone with a hobby, or even world travellers to journal their trips.
During this worshop, Alison will teach you how to sew the traditional Flying Geese patchwork block and then make a really well finished, sturdy book cover. Your course fee includes the fine lined A5 journal and sew-in Vilene. Suitable for confident beginners who are competent at straight sewing with accurate seams and rotary cutting. This is an ideal skill building class and the finished journals make lovely presents (if you can bear to give them away)! Machine sewn.
Materials and equipment required:
Sewing Machine. A basic sewing machine is fine. Don’t forget the standard straight sewing foot, pedal, lead and instruction booklet. Or, you can hire a machine (just add to your basket with your booking)
3 fat quarters of quiltmaking cotton (a FQ measures 50x56cm). One of the FQs* should have a good contrast to the other two. *Bold patterns can work really well. Traditional or modern florals, organic motifs, geometrics or busy tossed prints are better than patterns with a spaced or linear appearance. For ease of sewing, avoid directional prints
100% cotton thread in a neutral or coordinating colour
Basic sewing kit - fabric / thread scissors, pins, fabric clips, stitch ripper
Pencil or temporary marking pen for marking fabric and a 30cm ruler
