Tutor: Kate Higgens

Level - Confident Beginners

Jelly Rolls are marvellous pre-cut strips, all in colour coordinated collections. With pre-cuts you can start sewing quilts without any delay! In this workshop, you’ll sew a large quilt top using a Jelly roll and just one other fabric. This intriguing design looks like twisted ribbons or a fancy garden trellis, but the blocks are actually easy to sew. Remember you’ll get a completely different result depending on your fabric choices - this would look so pretty in a Feedsack / white option or strikingly modern in Ruby Star / Speckled coordinate.

There’s a choice of finished quilt sizes - either 64 x 64in or 64 x 72in. During the day, you’ll be busy piecing the patchwork blocks. Whilst you’ll may not get the top completely pieced, you’ll have the full instructions for finishing and you can quilt at your leisure at home. During the workshop Kate will also discuss border options - to have / not to have, and their role in framing the central patchwork and changing the size of the quilts. Machine sewn.

Materials and equipment required:

  • Sewing Machine. A basic sewing machine is fine. Don’t forget the 1/4-in or standard straight sewing foot pedal, spare bobbins, lead and instruction booklet. Alternatively you can hire a machine subject to availability (just add to your booking).

  • Rotary equipment - mat (at least A3 in size), ruler (at least 12-in long) and rotary cutter with a sharp blade.

  • Basic sewing kit - fabric / thread scissors, pins, stitch ripper

  • Cotton thread to coordinate with your Jelly roll or a neutral colour

  • Jelly Roll (40 strips). Or if you have plenty of fabric, make your own jelly before the workshop, cutting 40 strips from a variety of fabrics. Each strip is cut 2-1/2-in x width of the fabric (42-44-in). Cut with a rotary cutter and ruler for accuracy and straightness!

  • 2.6m background fabric (plain or semi plain to contrast with your Jelly). To save time, please pre-cut at least 20 2 1/2in strips WOF before the class. Note this is the exact amount needed, if you want to give yourself wiggle room, purchase 2.75m

To finish your quilt at home you’ll need

  • Backing fabric, binding fabric and wadding, thread for hand or machine quilting. Note quantities will depend on the size of quilt you sew - Kate can advise during the day

Refreshments are provided during the day with a break at lunchtime. You’re welcome to bring your own lunch, or there are many coffee shops, tea rooms and delis in the high street.

Of course, if there’s anything you’re missing, you can buy supplies in store during the day.
