Mitred Dresden Plate
Mitred Dresden Plate
Friday 27 June 10.30-4.30pm
Tutor: Elisabeth Beighton-Delille
Level - confident beginners/ intermediate
Be dazzled by Elisabeth’s quilt using the traditional Dresden Plate patchwork block. On this workshop you’ll learn a clever patchwork and appliqué technique which is easily sewn, but which creates a really impressive design. This technique is a great opportunity to use some of your fabric stash in a variety of colours to create a really stunning scrappy quilt. Or you can sew with a more curated colour palette (we’ve shown several students’ blocks here for inspiration) if you prefer.
During the day Elisabeth will teach you how to cut and sew the Dresden block and you can then stitch as many as you like. The quantities below are for the 160 x 160cm (63 x 63-in) nine block quilt shown here. Or, sew fewer blocks for cushions, a runner or wall quilt. This is also a good workshop to practise your rotary cutting. Machine sewn and machine or hand appliqué.
Materials and equipment required:
Sewing Machine. A basic sewing machine is fine. Don’t forget the 1/4-in or standard straight sewing foot pedal, spare bobbins, lead and instruction booklet. Or you can hire a machine subject to availability (add to your basket with your booking)
Rotary equipment - mat (at least A3 in size), ruler (at least 6x18in) and rotary cutter with a sharp blade
Dresden ruler - either the Sew Easy Dresden ruler £9 (which you can add to your booking). The Easy Dresden Ruler by Darlene Zimmerman (approx retail £11) is also suitable
Basic sewing kit - fabric scissors, pins, stitch ripper, marking pen
A4 sheet of cardboard (cereal box!)
Compass if you have one (we have spares) and a pencil
Cotton thread to coordinate or a neutral colour
90 x 5-in squares* from your stash for scrappy quilt blocks. Or 2 x Sweet Treats. Or 3 charm packs (with 3/4 left over). *To save time have at least 20 squares pre-cut before the class.
20cm x WOF for Dresden centre circles
2m background fabric (plain, plainish, low volume)
To complete your quilt at home, you’ll need: 40cm fabric for border A, 1.1m fabric for border B, 2.2m fabric for backing, 40cm of fabric for binding, 170 x 170cm (67 x 67-in) wadding, thread for quilting
If there is anything you’re missing, you can buy fabrics and haberdashery etc from the store during the day. Refreshments are provided at each workshop. At lunchtime, either bring your own lunch or visit one of the many delis and tea rooms in the high street.
