I Dig Dinos Appliqué
I Dig Dinos Appliqué
Tutor: Alison Abrahams
Thursday 12 March 10.30-4.30pm
Level: confident beginners
Meet Terence, the friendliest T-Rex around! Alison is a dab hand at appliqué and custom makes appliqué quilts for children. We commissioned her to make a dinosaur quilt for our window display and it was so popular we have developed a workshop so you can sew your own dino! In this workshop you’ll learn the technique of modern appliqué using a fusible medium, which enables you to create pictorial fabric images. You’ll be using Alison’s designs, so you don’t need to be able to draw!
Students can sew a smart T-Rex cushion 45x45cm (18x18-in) with an Oxford flange but you’ll also be shown how to sew Terence’s close friends, Simon the Stegasaurus and Bernie the Brontosaurus. If you prefer you can turn your designs into a quilt at home adding additional dinosaurs. Alison will also cover how to choose and use fabrics for appliqué pictures and how to design your own appliqué images for a one-of-a-kind quilt. Machine sewn.
I Dig Dinos is ideal for students who have completed an introductory course (or have taught themselves at home) and who are competent at machine sewing.
Equipment and material needed:
Sewing machine. Make sure beforehand that it works and you know how to thread it, wind the bobbin and straight stitch with an even tension. Remember the foot pedal, a standard foot for zig zag stitching, plus your straight sewing or ¼in foot, spare bobbin, instruction booklet etc. Put in a new needle before this workshop - it needs to be sharp!
Basic sewing kit containing sharp fabric scissors, small scissors or snips, pencil, pins and a stitch ripper
Cotton threads to coordinate with your fabrics (best to bring a selection of different colours)
Fat Quarter of plain/plainish fabric for the background
50cm fabric for a cushion border and the backing
Selection of fabrics (fat eighth or more) that say ‘dinosaur’ to you! Batiks, plains, small textures, smallish prints are all good, in contrasting colours (if in doubt, pop it in your bag)… You can also rummage in our fabric scrap basket
50cm of Bondaweb fusible medium
Fat quarter of wadding
Fat quarter of pre-shrunk calico or plain fabric for cushion lining
Refreshments are provided and there will be a break for lunch. You can either bring your lunch, or there are a wide variety of coffee shops, tea room and delis in the high street.
