Tutor: Marion Haslam

Level - Confident Beginners

In a crazy world, let’s have some good old fun with a relaxed patchwork technique. You’ll learn 3 ways of crazy piecing and can sew cushions, the start of a quilt or even a small framed block, as you wish. The choice is yours, as you can complete your sewing of larger piece at home. Crazy quilts can be sewn in traditional or modern patterns, plus plain or plainish fabrics. This workshop is suitable for anyone that can sew a straight line of stitching! It’s a great scrap buster technique, if you want to make a dent in your fabric stash. Note we will also have some of our popular Half-Pounder scrap bags available for students to buy. Marion will bring some vintage crazy patchwork from her collection to show you, dating from the C19 up to the 1940s.

This is an ideal skill builder technique for confident beginners. Machine sewn.

Materials and equipment required:

  • Sewing Machine. Don’t forget the 1/4-in or standard straight sewing foot, pedal, lead and instruction booklet. Alternatively you can hire a machine (just add to your basket with your booking)

  • Rotary equipment - mat (at least A3 in size), ruler (at least 12-in long) and rotary cutter with a sharp blade

  • Square ruler (from 6-1/2 up to 9-1/2-in will be useful) if you have one

  • Bring a bag of scraps! Pieces larger than 4 x 2-1/2in can all be used. A variety of shapes, sizes and colours is a good idea. Note crazy quilts can also incorporate some trickier fabrics, like velvet, baby cord or heavier silks. Unsure - bring them along!

  • Plain/plainish fabric required for finishing 50cm for a cushion, FQ for a framed piece, or approx 1m for a quilt top (depends on your finished quilt size)

  • 100% cotton thread in a coordinating colour or neutral

  • Basic sewing kit - fabric / thread scissors, pins, stitch ripper

Refreshments are provided with a break at lunchtime. You’re welcome to bring your own lunch, or there are many coffee shops, tea rooms and delis in the high street.

It’s advisable to sort out your materials beforehand to make best use of the workshop time. However, if there’s anything you’re missing, you can buy supplies in store during the day.

If you have any questions, please look at our FAQs or phone us on 01634 838880 before booking. Please note we do not send out reminders to students before the workshop as all the materials information is here. For shop location, see our Visit Us page.
