NEW! Shift Quilt
NEW! Shift Quilt
Sunday 20th September
10.30 - 4.30pm
Tutor: Mel Forrest
Level: Confident beginner
September always features ‘National Jelly Roll Day’, so come to this workshop and learn how to use these marvellous pre-cuts to make a quilt top. This fun 61 x 77-in (154 x 194cm) quilt is the perfect project for students who have completed a beginner workshop or made a couple of quilts, and are looking to develop their skills. The pattern works beautifully with all sorts of fabric designs. Pick a bright, modern Jelly Roll for a jazzy quilt, or a something more traditional for a timeless feel. Mel guides you through the cutting, showing you how to create the clever block in class. You’ll have all the details for how to complete your quilt top at home and you can choose to quilt by hand or machine in your own time. Machine sewn.
Materials and equipment required:
Sewing machine. It’s a good habit to put in a new machine needle. Don’t forget the pedal, lead, 1⁄4-in foot, bobbins, instruction booklet etc. Or, hire one of our class machines, (subject to availability.)
Rotary cutter, cutting board and 24-in long ruler (we also have a few spares for you to share). You may also want to bring a smaller ruler too, if you have one.
Basic sewing kit including fabric scissors, pins and a stitch ripper
A heat/air/water erasable fabric pen
One Jelly Roll or make your own by rotary cutting 36 (2.5 x 42-in) strips of fabric
3.7m of background fabric (plain/blender to complement your Jelly Roll)
Coordinating cotton or sew-all thread to match your fabrics or a neutral colour
To finish your quilt at home:
Backing fabric measuring 65 x 81-in (3.3m of non-directional 112cm wide or 1.7-2.1m of wide-width fabric)
1.7m of 90-in wide wadding
60cm binding fabric
Refreshments will be provided. It’s advisable to sort out your fabrics beforehand to make best use of the workshop time. You can buy additional fabric and haberdashery during the class.
