Tutor: Kate Higgens

Level - Confident Beginners / Intermediate

Writing letters may be an endangered pastime in modern times. However, as quilters, we can share our feelings on a daily basis with the comfort of a handmade quilt. If you’ve a child leaving for uni or college, send them off with a quilt this autumn, to make their new surroundings homely. The size is also ideal for brightening up a bed in a care home.

Kate’s quilt is a perfect project for using your favourite fat quarters. And remember, you can make your quilt pretty, bold, modern or monochrome, just by changing the fabrics. So if your child says, “no pretty flowers, Mum!”, we have plenty of fabrics suitable for them - we’ve shown just a few alternatives here, such as Sleuth, Folk & Lore and Chuck. You’ll learn how to sew oversized triangle blocks and a piano keys border. There are two size options. The quilt shown here is 55 x 83-in (140 x 211cm), or make it slightly shorter at *55 x 67-in (140 x 170cm).

Suitable for confident beginners, who have completed a beginners course (or have made a quilt by themselves). During the day you’ll be sewing the quilt top, so you can finish the quilting and binding in your own time at home. You should be confident sewing accurate 1/4-in seams.

Materials and equipment required:

  • Sewing Machine. A basic sewing machine is fine for this workshop. Don’t forget your 1/4-in foot, pedal and lead. Alternatively, hire a machine subject to availability (just add to your basket with your booking).

  • 20 fat quarters (50 x 56cm) or * 15 fat quarters for the smaller size. See note below.

  • 100% cotton thread in a coordinating or neutral colour

  • Basic sewing kit - fabric / thread scissors, pins, stitch ripper

  • Fabric marking pen, chaco liner

  • Rotary cutter, mat and ruler

To finish your quilt at home

  • Wadding and backing fabric 59 x 87-in (*59 x 71-in), 60cm (*50cm) fabric for binding, quilting thread.

Note: before the class, you can pre-cut the FQs to save time. From each FQ, first cut three 2-1/2 x 22-1/2-in strips, then one 10 x 22-1/2-in strip. Cross cut into two 10 x 10-in squares. Check that you orientate the FQ correctly, so you cut along the longer side. (Tip! Cut with the selvedge horizontal, along the bottom of your cutting mat).

Refreshments will be provided during the day. There will be a break for lunch. You’re welcome to bring your own lunch, or there are a wide variety of coffee shops, tea rooms and delis in the high street.

It’s advisable to sort out your materials beforehand to make best use of the workshop time. However, if there’s anything you’re missing, you can buy supplies in store during the day.
