NEW! Double Twist Star
NEW! Double Twist Star
Sat 2 May FULL! or Sat 2 July
10.30-4.30pm
Tutor: Marion Haslam
Level - Intermediate
Spice Route is a favourite quilt of Marion’s and is often on display. This is the first time we’ve offered it as a workshop. The double twist star quilt pattern is the perfect vehicle for learning a new technique of partial seam sewing and quick-to-sew triangles. You’ll produce a really lovely star block and can play with your fabric colours. It’s an ideal block for using favourite fat quarters as it’s a great vehicle for scrap busting. My quilt was made with patterned fabrics from my stash and as always, the more fabrics you use, the more interesting the blocks!
The quilt shown here is 87 x 110cm (34 x 43-in) but you’ll have enough fabric for a quilt top up to 110 x 110cm^ (43 x 43-in^). For a still larger quilt, simply double or treble the quilt top quantities. Students should be competent sewing accurate 1/4-in seams. Machine sewn.
As you’re concentrating on piecing the blocks during the day, rather than a finished quilt of a set size, you can also turn your sewn blocks into a bed or table runner, or smaller quilt and matching cushions^.
Materials and equipment required:
Sewing Machine. A basic sewing machine is fine. Don’t forget the 1/4-in or standard straight sewing foot pedal, lead and instruction booklet. Alternatively you can hire a machine subject to availability (just add to your your booking)
Rotary equipment - mat (at least A3 in size) and rotary cutter with a sharp blade and ruler
100% cotton thread in a coordinating colour to your fabric or a neutral colour
Basic sewing kit - fabric / thread scissors, pins, 12-in ruler/quilters quarter, fabric marking pen, or pencil, stitch ripper
1m of plain/plainish/low volume fabric for the background
4 fat quarters of medium tone fabrics (*can be a mix of colours and bolder/smaller patterns / plainish prints)
4 fat quarters of darker tone fabrics*
To finish your quilt at home, you’ll need
50cm border fabric
1.2m wadding and backing fabric (each 115cm wide)
Thread of your choice for quilting
40cm fabric for binding
Note ^ if making a quilt larger than 87 x 110cm, wadding and backing quantities will need adjusting. Marion can help you calculate these during the workshop.
Refreshments will be provided during the day. There will be a break for lunch. You’re welcome to bring your own lunch, or there are a variety of coffee shops, tea rooms and delis in the high street.
It’s advisable to sort out your materials beforehand to make best use of the workshop time. However, if there’s anything you’re missing, you can buy supplies in store during the day.
