NEW! Apple Core Patchwork
Tutor: Marion Haslam
Thursday 23 May - 7.00-9.30pm
Level - All Levels
Looking for a new hobby that is stress-free and technology-free? Learn the craft of hand sewn patchwork and you’ll have a mindful sewing project that is portable enough for sewing on the train, whilst you’re doing the parent taxi or on the sofa in the evening.
Apple Core is an unusual one block patchwork design, also known as Spools and Double Axe and the pattern was first documented in 1930. A quilt in Marion's vintage quilt collection, started her interest in this traditional design. This workshop is suitable for all levels of stitcher.
During the workshop, you’ll learn how to sew this patchwork block which can be turned into a cushion cover, table runner or even a small bag for your sewing supplies. Suitable for all levels of stitcher, as long as you can sew a running stitch and thread a needle, we can teach you the rest. During this bite-size workshop you’ll learn the technique which you can complete in your own time at home. Hand sewn.
Materials and equipment required:
100% quilting weight cotton fabric. A Charm Pack or Sweet Treat is perfect as it's the right size and has a variety of fabric patterns. Or raid your stash for fabrics that are at least 5 x 5-in and bring about 1m of fabrics. Note - the only fabrics worth avoiding are bold stripes. They can be an assortment of patterns, or all plains, or half plains and half patterns. It's fine to bring a wide assortment of colours for a scrappy style effect, or if bringing one colour, you'll need a variety of shades and tones.
(Optional) 50cm of plain fabric* if you are bringing all patterned fabrics
Basic sewing kit - large and small fabric scissors, plenty of pins, hand sewing needle, thimble (optional)*
Apple Core acrylic template £7.50 (we have a limited number whilst stocks last and this can be added to your booking)* or an A4 sheet of template plastic is fine too*
Fabric marking pen* or pencil* of your choice that will show up on your fabrics. Marion will demonstrate different options. If in doubt, bring whatever marking tools you have
Refreshments will be provided during the workshop. It’s best to sort out your materials beforehand. The haberdashery mentioned * above is all available instore.
