Let's Start at the Very Beginning

Tuesday 19 June - 31 July 7.00-9.30pm £60 - new autumn dates coming soon!

Beginners. Inspired by the words of Julie Andrews(!), this is a great course for sewers wanting to make their first patchwork quilt (approx size 112x112cm). You'll cover choosing colours and fabrics, preparing and sewing your patches, blocks and borders, learning to use a rotary cutter, waddings, hand quilting and finishing your quilt, plus all the hints and tips that usually take years to learn. Students can complete a quilt in a short period of time on this comprehensive course spread over 5 evenings. Students should be prepared to continue sewing between classes if needed. Machine sewn and hand quilted. Students will be sent a materials list once they have booked.

(* Note - the 2 week break on 17 and 24 July allows students to continue their hand quilting at home).

Smashing Star Elisabeth Beighton-Delille

Smashing Star Stash Buster

Saturday 14 July 10.30-4.30pm £40 - FULL!

Intermediate. ♥ Scrap friendly. This fantastic star quilt has been wow-ing customers recently as it's been on display in the shop window. The dramatic pattern is an ideal opportunity for you to use some of your prized stash and looks really effective in a variety of colours. If you want a similar background we have a good selection of low volume patterns in the shop. Elisabeth is really skilled at combining colours and patterns so come on this course and learn for an expert. Machine sewn. Students will be sent a materials list once they have booked.

New dates! Beginners Zig Zag Quilt - Marion Haslam

Wednesday 8 August - 5 September 7.00-9.30pm £50

Complete Beginners/All Levels. Come and learn patchwork and quilting and you can sew your own simple, fun quilt in just a few weeks. Ideal as a gift for new parents, or as a lap quilt for an older relative, this course is a great opportunity to get to know your sewing machine. You'll learn lots of essential skills which can be put to good use in other quilts. You'll be using charm squares which are pre-cut squares of fabric. This makes the prep and sewing of the quilt fast and the charms come in a wide choice of designs, so your quilt can be bright and zingy or classic and traditional. Machine sewn and hand quilted. Students will be sent a materials list once they have booked. Note: this is a 4 week course. There is a break on 29 August to enable students to continue working on their quilts at home.

Luscious Lampshades

Wednesday 29 August 6.30-9.00pm  - 4 spaces left

£30 includes kit and material

All levels. Bespoke rolled-edge fabric lampshades can cost a small fortune in interiors stores. Yet you can make your own 30cm cylinder lampshade in just a few hours on this bite size course … it's easy when you know how!  Suitable for use as a pendant, table or floor lamp, the course fee includes all the lampshade equipment you’ll need, plus your choice of retro, modern, traditional or pretty fabric from the shop. No sewing involved and you'll take home a stunning finished lampshade. And if you need any further encouragement to book this course at Hometown, we regularly see other lampshade courses on offer for £40 or more which don't include the fabric!

New dates! Simply Strippy - Mavis Haslam

Saturday 25 August and 8 September 2.00-4.30pm £40

Confident Beginners. ♥ Scrap friendly. This quilt-as-you-go technique is an ideal way of tackling a finished quilt in ‘bite-size’ pieces and is a very popular course for using up odd strips of various fabric widths left over from previous projects. For those of you without a huge fabric stash you can incorporate spare Jelly Roll™ fabrics along with your scraps. You’ll piece and machine quilt the blocks for a small 9 block quilt or 8 block runner on the first part of the course and learn how to complete the quilt on the second part. The break between the two workshops will enable you to continue sewing your blocks at home. Many students have then gone on to sew a larger quilt using the same techniques after the course. As long as you can sew a straight line, you’ll be fine even if you are still a beginner! Machine sewn (mostly). Students will be sent a materials list once they have booked.

HOMETOWN useful info and FAQs

Please read the following carefully so you know what level of course to sign up for.

·                Beginners - suitable for all students with no previous knowledge of patchwork and quilting. We’ll explain all the processes and jargon! Note: if it’s a machine-sewn class you must be familiar with your sewing machine (threading the machine, filling bobbins, straight stitching etc) before you come on the course.

·                All levels - simple techniques suitable for all levels of experience. Realistically, on 1-day courses, tutors concentrate on the specific technique (usually the quilt top) and not all aspects of making a quilt. (For complete beginners’ courses, you should sign up for 'Start at the Very Beginning' as you make a finished quilt on this course). For quiltmakers who have done a little patchwork, some time ago, All Levels courses can be a great refresher course.

·                Confident Beginners and Intermediate – students should have been quiltmaking on their own or have completed a beginners’ class to be familiar with the general basis of patchwork. Students should be competent machine sewers and have experience with using rotary cutting equipment.

Access

All courses take place at Hometown, 62 High Street, Rochester. There are several car parks nearby and we are a 5-minute walk from Rochester station and 12 minute walk from Strood station. Sorry, as there are stairs, there is no wheelchair access to the workshop area.

Costs and payment

The class fee includes tea and coffee throughout the class. For day classes you can bring your own packed lunch or buy it from one of the many delis, tearooms or coffee shops in Rochester during the lunch break.

At Hometown we aim to keep the cost of classes as affordable as possible as we want to encourage everyone to sew. This does mean that we need a minimum of six students to make courses viable, with 6-10 as the maximum, depending on the topic. If you want a course to run, please book early, as we need to confirm materials lists to students a minimum of 2 weeks in advance of the course. We regularly benchmark our prices against other quilt shops and sewing cafes and we know other venues, which charge up to £75 for day classes and £120 for Beginners’ quilt courses of a similar length!

Once you have booked, a materials / equipment list will be sent to you before the class. If courses are full, or you are interested in another date for a class please give us your contact details, as we may be able to schedule a new date subject to tutor availability. In this case, we always contact those on the waiting list first with the new dates.

Sewing machine hire: There are two class sewing machines, subject to availability. These must be booked in advance. The charge is £5 per day, £7.50 for longer courses and £3 for studio sessions/bite size classes. Please add these to your booking form if needed.

Saving you money

Hometown has the following schemes you can enjoy:

Deposit scheme - the first class in this series must be paid for in full. For subsequent courses, you can pay a £10 deposit at time of booking. To take advantage of the deposit scheme, your credit/debit card details are taken and the balance is debited 1 month before the course. The receipt will be given to you at the class.

(*excludes any workshops at reduced prices or with promotional offers when booking and a multi-session course counts as one stamp). All students who have attended classes at our new shop, already have a card set up for them and are collecting stamps. We're delighted to have handed out many completed gift cards.
